One hundredth...

... blog post celebration!
I thought it would never be achieved! I am more of a maker and talker than a writer, so these posts have been a very good exercise for me.
I'll use this auspicious occasion to share something sad and something happy.
The something sad?
Today I said good bye to our Christmas tree...

I wait until the absolute last possible moment to remove the decorations and wind up the lights for another year. This year's tree-- the most fragrant of Nova Scotia Balsam Fir-- was set up on December 9th. She glowed in the sitting area off of the kitchen until this afternoon.
Skeeter, tree and me went for our traditional "long walk" into the woods...

The something happy?
I know at least a handful of you have been visiting my blog on a regular basis... so, to celebrate my 100th post I wish to gift you!!
I have a token of appreciation for one lucky person who visits...
eight beautiful buttons.

They are hand crafted in Nepal out of non-endangered water buffalo bone and have been dipped in henna for an antiqued cast. These will look fantastic on all sorts of projects.

Just leave a comment sharing-- in 10 words or less-- why you love buttons!!
On February 1st a lucky winner will be announced and the buttons will be sent on their way!
Make certain that I can contact you by email. Include a link to your blog or site or leave you email address with your comment!
Thank you for your kind words and encouragement!
Here's to the next 100...
The giveaway has now ended and we have a winner.
Thank you for all of your wonderful comments!!!

Just discovered your blog and am knitting your wonderful Modern Quilt Wrap and loving every minute of it! I've been entranced with buttons since playing with my grandmother's jar of buttons as a child. My own children played with my collection and now my grandchildren like to sort, stack, count, arrange and choose their favorites from my button jar.
Congratulations on 100, Annie

I love those buttons! Buttons can spark the imagination. While I imagine them in creative projects, I have fond memories of my mother's button jars which lended themselves to a different type of imagination. My mom would allow me to play with them when I was a small child. I can remember hours of sorting, counting, arranging in pictures etc. That fascination still exists today. I love unconventional button creations. There's something special about using functional items to create things of beauty!

Buttons' shiny roundness- beautiful counterpoint to warm, soft, squiggly wool.

Congrats with your 100th!

And buttons... its the best thing on Sundays, put all your buttons in a bowl and sort them out...
or use them as eyes on a doll,
or find the perfect vintage buttons in a thriftstore:
It all makes me happy!

My ten word comment on buttons:
I can't say "why" I love buttons... I just do.
More words:
(I have jars and bowls and tins full of them... bakelite and bone, glass and plastic, wood and metal, old, older, oldest and even some new...
Love 'em!)
Congrats on your 100th!
I don't think blogger can give you my email... coneryka, at, jmu, dot, edu

I recently took over and sorted my mom's buttons. As a stash, they are just as aesthetically pleasing as yarn, with the advantage of fitting all in one box. Actually, I'm keeping them in an antique Corningware casserole dish. So pretty...

The really old buttons are works of art. Buttons are affordable and can make or break a garmet. Buttons are fun to sort and handle, remembering which garment they were originally from.

The buttons remind me of my grandma's many button jars. . .treasures waiting to be discovered.

I am button collector, since childhood ( playing with my Mom's button jar). I don't have any like yours, which I think are unusual.

Buttons can be the inspiration for a project. Oh and I love that picture with the Christmas tree in the snow. That red hat really cracks me up.

I love buttons for their little cheery bits of color and whimsey and for the little stories that go along with them. My dad sent me my Mom's buttons (along with the rest of her craft/knitting/sewing things) when she died and the button box has been a source of warm memories and stories to pass on to my own kids (she died before my younger ones were born). My 8yo mines the button box for treasures to add to her own growing button stash and I've heard her passing on stories to the cat about the tiny flower button that Oma used on the blue Barbie sweater or the Peter Rabbit buttons that Oma gave Mom for the dress that her older sisters wore before she got it.

Buttons evoke in me a nostalgia for the past. Who wore this button? What fingers slipped it in and out of button holes? Buttons with lots of wear are especially treasured. And besides, they take up so little room. The perfect "collectible".

I love buttons because they are little sculptures. They are a wink, an invitation, the gatekeeper of secrets. A pause, a stop, a portal. But mostly they're fun.

Anonymous said...

Because they are full of buttony goodness.

Because you can tell where someone's from by how they say "button."

Because these particular buttons are almost a dead-on bone version of the ceramic sunrise buttons I used on the first sweater I ever knit.

Just because.

Because you can attach them to anything!

Buttons remind me of being a child, those days when we were enchanted by simpler things. My father was an antique/used furniture dealer, and often would come home with boxes or tins of buttons, which my mother, a seamtress extraordinaire, snatched up immediately. I loved to sit and paw through them, searching for treasure, that one button that spoke to me.

Congratulations on your 100th post!
Your buttons are so lovely, and I would be delighted to give them a home! I am a dyed in the wool buttonaholic, and those lovely buttons are treasures. I loved reading other people's comments about their button jars. Mine are cherished, too. When my mother in law died, my sister in law and I went carefully through the beloved button jar and made sure that the buttons were shared out among the family members. Everyone was touched!
all the best

Hi! I saw your post on ravelry and I had to come and check out your blog.

I know this sounds silly, but I have always loved buttons. When I was a kid I would always take my moms button jar and dump it out on the floor so that I could look at them all before putting them away. I would sew buttons on any sort of crafty project! Buttons can change the style of a project. They can take a plain old sweater and make it fun and spunky or refined and elegant. What's not to love about buttons!

Why do I love buttons? Buttons hold the memories that make me smile.

Congratulations on your 100th post!! I love buttons because they are beautiful & bring back fond memories of my mother & grandmother. I have continued their pattern of acquiring buttons, & delite in going through them periodically. Your buttons would be a wonderful addition to my collection - actually, it appears that they would be the perfect finishing touch to a sweater I just have to block! Thanks!

I love buttons because I remember sorting through Grandma's huge button jar which I think in its previous life was one of those jumbo pickle jars. About 20 years ago her button jar got top dollar on auction after Grandma passed away. Now I wish I had kept it. Hindsight....
